Little Rock (LR) women’s soccer defeated Arkansas State (ASU) 3-1 on penalty kicks in first-round action of the Sun Belt Tournament in Foley, Ala., Wednesday morning.
After 110 minutes of play yielded a 1-1 tie, LR prevailed in penalty kicks scored by Liesa Seifert, Erna Gudjonsdottir and Sairra Tucker.
With the win, the fifth-seeded Trojans advance to play No. 1 seed South Alabama on Friday at 4 p.m.
ASU, a 4-seed, struck first with a header goal from Dana O’Boye in the 55th minute.
In the 69th minute, LR evened the tally when junior Arola Aparicio Gili scored off a long pass from Siefert.
The Red Wolves’ Kelsey Ponder logged seven saves, but allowed the three decisive penalty kicks.
The Trojans outshot ASU 19-8, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Ten of LR’s shots came in the second half.
However, LR committed 20 fouls to ASU’s seven, including nine in the first half alone. Samantha Rolka received a yellow card in the match’s 57th minute.
LR’s next opponent, South Alabama, defeated Appalachian State 2-0 Wednesday afternoon. The Jaguars are 12-5-1 overall, with a 9-1-0 conference record and a five-game winning streak.
